Scandi Living

Posted by Linda Swarbrick on

Inspired by the 19th century Swedish artist Carl Larsson, Scandi Living and Dalahome have designed a beautiful and functional trestle dining table with a matching bench, based on a classic Swedish design that provides a homely feel, yet with a contemporary touch that will complement any home from the modern to the traditional.

The furniture is available exclusively through Scandi Living’s website and shop in picturesque Hindhead, Surrey. The standard table size is made to a generous 210 cm x 88 cm size, but can also be ordered in longer 220 cm and 230 cm lengths. The complementary bench measures 200 cm by 40 cm. The table and bench are available in a choice of colours: Nordic white, cream and alternative shades of Gustavian grey and blue.

Dalahome and Scandi Living plan to extend this range and launch further pieces over the next year.

We felt there was a gap in the market for a range of contemporary furniture based on classic Swedish designs that was both handmade and painted in England, yet affordable. Having previously supplied restored and re-painted antique pieces to Scandi Living it was logical for Dalahome to progress with a range of furniture based on traditional designs and painting methods that acknowledge the past but look to the future.

The table and bench are hand made in England at a small workshop in London using only seasoned Scandinavian pine from sustainable sources and then hand painted to order by Dalahome in a traditional Swedish way that reflects the Scandinavian love of colour, light and simplicity of style. Layers of paint are applied by hand and built up to create an authentic, rustic soft painted finish that is uniquely Scandinavian. Using Swedish made eco-friendly paints starting with a classic dark red primer and building up in fine layers of individual coats with each coat rubbed back by hand to reveal the underlying primer coat and then finished with a brushed patina. This gives the piece an authentic aged look before being finished in a matt varnish to preserve and add lustre to the luminous and mellow quality of the painting. This method of painting ensures the piece has a soft and rustic finish that wears beautifully with age and accentuates the original painting.
